Fashion PR Podcast: Inside Charleston Fashion Week with Ayoka Lucas

This Sunday, PR Couture caught up with Charleston Fashion Week's Creative Director, Ayoka Lucas, to learn more about this up-and coming-fashion week as well as get the behind-the-scenes scoop on the logistics of producing a week-long event of this magnitude!

Listen as Ayoka, who is also Style Editor at Charletson Magazine, advises emerging designers on how to best catch the attention of fashion editors, speaks to the value of fashion bloggers (CFW is a blogger friendly event!) and video as an effective PR channel.

Founded in 2007, Charleston Fashion Week continues to celebrate the local design community— from boutique owners and emerging local talent to Charleston’s fashionable elite and visitors alike. Echoing Bryant Park’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, towering tents in downtown Charleston’s Marion Square will host the five-day fête. March 24-28.

This year, CFW features celebrity judges Cynthia Rowley and Project Runway's Michael Night, for their Emerging Designer competition, sponsored by the Art Institute Charleston.  A portion of the proceeds benefiting the Charleston chapter of Dress for Success and the Medical University of South Carolina's (MUSC) Children’s Hospital.

More than 100 models walk the 48-foot runway in collections from local talent and nationally renowned design houses.  A make-up tent, accessories lounge, photographer pit, and VIP area complete the space where more than 6,000 guests are expected for CFW 2009.

Ayoka Lucas’ career as an innovative stylist began more than a decade ago in Atlanta, where she styled a local nightlife columnist and other celebrities. After relocating to Charleston, she wrote a weekly column that combined fashion, pop culture, and local events for Charleston City Paper. Lucas then joined the Charleston magazine team as style editor, producing the magazine’s monthly Style File, quarterly fashion features, and ongoing style blog. She is also the creative visionary behind Charleston magazine’s Charleston Fashion Week, which has received national recognition and been named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for March 2009. Lucas also serves as style editor for Charleston Home and Charleston Weddings magazines and as a contributing fashion correspondent on NBC News 2, ABC News 4’s Lowcountry Live, and 95SX-FM’s Two Girls and a Guy morning show.

Meet Crosby Noricks

Hi. I'm Crosby, Founder of PR Couture, Fashion Brand Strategist and PR Girl Mentor. I care about supporting and celebrating fashion publicists as well as helping companies connect with their audiences in more meaningful ways. Recently, iMedia included me in their annual list of 25 Internet Marketing Leaders and Innovators, along with people from Starbucks, Twitter and Volkswagon, which I think is pretty neat. Like Elle Woods, I am a Gemini-vegetarian (that's about where the similarities end). Let's connect: Check out my full bio, Brand Elixir sessions for brands or shoot me a note at
