Winner of the 2018 Bespoke Communications Award for Best Agency to Work For, J Public Relations is a travel and hospitality PR powerhouse. As an internationally robust and powerful force with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, and London, JPR has garnered success through their vast client roster with including domestic and international hotel, restaurant, and wellness brands such as the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, InterContinental, Disney, Marriott and many more.
There are a few perks to working for this phenomenal team including complimentary hotel nights and the gift of a designer handbag after 5 years with the company. J Public Relations also attracts superior talent and clients through an in-house social media division, internal trend reports and an annual account team budget used to knock the socks off of both clients and the media.
The agency continues to see exponential growth in the past year, with a 17-percent increase in revenue, topping $9 million, under the leadership of founder and partner Jamie Lynn Sigler and business partner Sarah Evans.
How does it feel to win the Best Agency to Work for award? How is your team going to celebrate?
The celebration will be unmistakable because our new San Diego headquarters will be aglow in a rose gold hue produced by the LED system that was specifically installed to announce big clients and victories within the agency and of course in true JPR form, rosé will be flowing!
What is your team most excited about right now in terms of industry trends, campaigns you are working on, etc.?
We’re excited about truly integrated campaigns. Instead of treating PR and social media as separate strategies, the industry is blending them into one cohesive strategy which makes so much sense and delivers a true brand campaign. Our social team is utilizing the impressive coverage our PR team secures and our PR team is able to utilize the beautiful content our social team captures to tell the clients’ stories. It’s a win, win and this approach creates a holistic way of thinking for the whole team.
Do you have any new or exciting changes happening at J Public Relations?
We are thrilled about our new luxury travel podcast, Priority Status™ by JPR. Listeners can expect interviews with industry heavyweights, trendsetters, hotel leaders and top media. We want Priority Status™ to be a place that inspires our listeners and brings them closer to travel. Check it out on the iTunes app.
It’s less about perks (while we do have them!) and more about daily practices. Listen to your employees, champion their accomplishments publicly and work together as a team.
How do you encourage proper balance for your employees? Have you seen a significant difference in retention by implementing the offerings you provide to your employees?
JPR believes in a work-life blend rather than the elusive work-life balance and our offices reflect that mind-shift. Tossing out the office blueprint, teams ebb and flow from quiet rooms to the collaborative, sun-filled living room. At our San Diego HQ, there’s also a napping pod, baby nursing lounge and a full-service J Spa to ready for meetings after long flights or Fit Friday workouts. Behind the scenes is where the unsexy blending takes shape. Directors and the Executive team strategize account roles and monitor hours assigned to teams and workloads through a real-time tracking system. We also offer competitive benefits such as vacation trade nights at our client Hotels and encourage employees to refresh on the regular and utilize their earned vacation time. It’s how we minimize burn-out and maximize our prized retention. The agency has 15 team members with more than 5 years and 9 with more than 3 years at the agency. The executive team has longevity of 5-plus years.
What three perks would you suggest other agencies offer employees if they don’t already have much of a work-balance program? Where should they start?
It’s less about perks (while we do have them!) and more about daily practices. Listen to your employees, champion their accomplishments publicly and work together as a team. We celebrate our employees on Rosegold, an agency-wide Facebook group where we share press placements and media relations wins, team anniversaries, personal milestones and engage in company-wide collaborations where every voice is heard. Having offices in San Diego, New York, Los Angeles and London, it’s a great way to keep our offices engaged and collaborating. We are constantly learning from our team and tailoring our culture to make JPR the best workplace it can be for our employees.
If we looked inside your purse/work bag right now, what PR survival must-haves would we find?
You’ll probably find our laptops, cellphones, passport, a bkr® water bottle filled with sparkling water, EltaMD® UV Clear facial sunscreen, Beautycounter® Peppermint Lip Conditioner, Kerstin Florian® Rehydrating Neroli Water, and the latest issue of Condé Nast Traveler.
