3 signs freelance PR is a smart next career move

Written by Crosby Noricks

Over the past year, many of us have gained more independence working remotely, and may have finally had time to put effort toward side passions or consulting outside of work.

Are you coming to the realization that not only is working for someone else not the best professional fit for you long-term, but that you need to take some action STAT on that dream of being our own boss?

Here are 3 signs that you have outgrown your PR job.

You can barely get up for your first Zoom in the morning.

If you are finding it hard to rise and shine with energy and enthusiasm for the day, it could of course be Pandemic fatigue, but may also be a sign that your work isn’t working for you any longer. If you are waking up tired, hardly able to throw on your top-half outfit, wash your face and and give each meeting and client your best – listen to your body.

People are asking to hire you outside of work.

If you have made enough of a name for yourself within your current circle to receive referrals for freelance work and have successfully built enough of an infrastructure to take on a la carte projects (you can invoice and receive payments) then you have proven that it is possible to get paid as an independent consultant. Ta-da!

You are craving more autonomy and creativity in client work.

Perhaps your leadership is more traditional than you are and slow to innovate. Maybe you’re tired of your ideas getting shut down in favor of playing it safe. You could be frustrating by the chain of command that stalls progress – whatever it is. – if you don’t feel creatively expressed or able to do the work you think will yield the best results – that’s a big sign you are ready to lead the show solo.

So what say you: Is it time to make the switch to doing your own thing?
