KCD Publicist for Richard Tyler, Mary Cris Paulin, shares her thoughts on working Fashion PR:
Mc: So what are the ups and downs of this work?
MP: Sometimes you wish you had more time to take a break. It’s a small company, and you sometimes have to work at night when you’ve been working a full day. And you have to be on, which can be a little tough sometimes. There used to be a slow season in fashion — late summer. That doesn’t really happen anymore, now it just keeps going. Sometimes you come across people with an attitude, but working for a PR firm, you have to rise to the occasion and deal with them in a nice way. I’ve always felt that whether it’s the receptionist or the president, everyone should be treated the same way. The good parts are that the work is always changing and I like the people I work with, and also that you get invited to industry events, which is fun. These people become your friends.
Mc: So, what aptitudes does someone in your field need?
MP: I’d suggest studying communications — public relations, advertising, marketing. You also need writing skills. You have to be outgoing, personable; you have to be able to think on your feet and juggle a lot.
