Freshly inspired by the diverse approaches to the short fashion film genre, courtesy of the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, the integration of fashion and dance has caught my attention. Perhaps we are all feeling pulled by a Black Swan meets So You Think You Can Dance inspiration set, but my sense is that dance, its stories, personalities, attire and history is just starting come into the fashion industry spotlight. Here are a few of my current favorites:
Rachel Roy “Move”
Move, directed by Dominique Palombo for Rachel Roy’s Spring 11 Collection, was my favorite of the opening night shorts at LJFFF
Lover “A Dancer For One”
Australian label Lover set the mood of their latest collection with this light narrative about Senior Artist Amber Scott of the Australian Ballet Company. Directed by Alice Wesley Smith and Kasia Werstak.
Chloe “Block”
Chloé’s spring/summer 2011 collection gets the modern treatment from choreographer by corps de ballet member Justin Peck, who stars in the film along with New York City Ballet principal Janie Taylor. Directed by Bon Duke
*Bonus Video – Gold Panda, You
While not an official fashion dance video, or even an official video, I like it. Featuring dancer Linda Stark, shot in Germany and created by Thomas Borowiak.
How else do you see the world of dance making its mark on fashion? What are you favorite fashion dance films?
